Winter Break Camp 2020: ANIMATED CITY!

Monday - Friday | February 17-21 | 9:30am - 3:00pm | Ages 8-14

A hands-on and creative week-long camp for all kids ages 8-14: Producing our own animation characters, worlds, and stories. With Chelsea Snider, Zebi Williams, Sharece Johnson and Hazel Katz.

In this winter break camp, we transformed Kite’s Nest into a mixed media animation studio. Over the course of our week together, 37 kids and teens (ages 8-19!) learned the art of stop-motion animation to create their own beautiful, hilarious, scary, wacky, and heartfelt worlds and stories.. Students constructed their own characters, sets, and props; learned to storyboard and write scripts; practiced with lighting design and shooting; and created audio, dialogue, and sound effects. We used clay, cardboard, paper, paint, legos, inanimate objects with googly eyes and just about everything we could find to bring our characters and stories to life. Check out our short film (above), which guides you through our Willy-Wonka-esque clubhouse filled with young animators and their world of worlds. You’ll enter a disco ball shop and an alien dance party; meet a lost dog, alone in the forest; hear the story of two grandparents taking care of their grandchild after being bullied; and meet the moon, playing with the earth’s tides!  You’ll visit an underwater world, a basketball court, a dangerous waterfall, a room dedicated to math, and more…!

Thank you to our amazing team of lead teachers: Chelsea Snider, Zebi Williams, Sharece Johnson and Hazel Katz. Animated City was inspired by a powerful new animated kid series - called All Together Now! - created by Kite’s Nest teaching artist Molly Allis.
