SCHOOL BREAK CAMPS 2018
Winter Break: CAMP CARDBOARD
Collaborating to create a cardboard universe and miniature city, with guest artist Molly Allis.
Dates: Monday, Feb 19 - Friday, Feb 23: 9:30am - 3pm
Ages: 8 - 14
Camp fee: $335
In this week-long immersive camp, youth will collaborate with guest teaching artists to design and build a miniature city and large-scale immersive installation, using cardboard and other recycled materials. This camp will combine storytelling, visual arts and sculpture, and urban planning/design: depending on the students’ vision and design, the city might include skyscrapers, highways, and tunnels; it may be a utopia or a dystopia; it may be lit, or traversed by mini remote-controlled cardboard cars. Led by Teaching Artist Molly Allis, a multi-media artist who works primarily with recycled materials, youth will explore the hidden potential of discarded objects, and the possibilities of environmentally-responsible art. Days will be spent planning and drawing designs, exploring our own city for inspiration, and cutting, molding, shaping, and hot-gluing the city into life. At the end of the week, we’ll host a public event at the Back Gallery, inviting our neighbors and the families of all youth participants to share in our creation.
Spring Break: We Make Noise
Creative instrument-making, music production, and public sound installations.
Dates: Monday, April 2 - Friday, April 6: 9:30am - 3:00pm
Ages: 8 - 14
Camp fee: $335
In We Make Noise, youth will dive into a week of creative instrument-making and participatory music production. Throughout the week we'll work with guest teaching artists, musicians, recording artists and instrument makers. We'll design and build instruments out of recycled and unexpected objects, creating our own orchestra of original instruments and pop-up music installations. We'll practice writing lyrics, recording beats, and making collaborative music productions. At the end of the week we'll take our orchestra out into Hudson, inviting our neighbors and families to make music with us. What happens when people of all ages come together through creative musical play? What does the city symphony sound like? Everyone is invited to join us for a public performance and musical jam at the end of the week. Save the date: Friday, April 6 at 3pm - location TBD.
