Stretch, jump, write, repeat: telling stories with our bodies and words. With Rebecca Posner and Chelsea Arend.
Do you have days when you’re overflowing with ideas and inspiration - and other days when you feel stuck, tight, or closed off?  Does your body feel different as your emotions change? How do you move through writers block? This afterschool class combines movement and writing to explore the stories, characters, and imaginative worlds that live inside of our minds and our bodies. We’ll use dance, theater, yoga, movement, games and somatics to explore our memories, emotions, and imaginations, and to inspire our creative writing and storytelling. Each class we’ll explore a new way of expressing ourselves, producing stories, poems, or movement performances to show the world what’s inside us.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN

Wednesdays, 3:30pm - 6:00pm | Sep 18 - Oct 30 | Ages 8 - 14
Designing our dream parks, secret gardens, hidden tunnels and more. With Emily Carpenter and Kristen Jones.
Do you have a favorite place to go outside? A favorite path, park, or playground? A favorite forest, cave, or farm? What makes different outdoor environments beautiful or unpleasant, fun or boring, welcoming or unwelcoming? In this class, we’ll get our hands busy and dirty as we design and build different outdoor environments, collaborating with professional landscapers and landscape architects. We’ll take field trips to different places, seeing what features of outdoor environments we like, love, and can’t stand. We’ll learn about where rain water goes when it falls, and where different plants and trees grow. With the new Kite’s Nest property as our main site and inspiration, we’ll design and draw our own dream playscapes: outdoor places where kids can explore, dig, climb and play. Then we’ll work with Kite’s Nest’s team of landscape architects to share our dreams, and bring them to life. Maybe we’ll build our own outdoor fort, a hide-and-seek tunnel, a napping hammock, or garden art...

Class fee: $250. Class fee includes materials and a daily healthy snack. Sliding-scale and full scholarships are available for qualifying families. Payment plans are available to all. Please request a tuition assistance application to determine your tuition amount or payment plan. SUPERHERO STYLES

Wednesdays, 3:30pm - 6:00pm | Nov 6 - Dec 15 | Ages 8 - 14
From comics to costumes: illustrating, stitching, and constructing our alter egos. With Ngonda Badila and Nellie Ostow.
Do you have a superhero alter ego? Have you ever dreamed of having super powers. If you were a superhero, what would your signature costume look like? In this class we’ll share stories about some of our funniest, most awkward, and proudest moments in life. We’ll use these stories to create alter egos and secret identities for ourselves, and then we’ll engage a range of artistic mediums -- drawing and illustration, visual storytelling, fashion design and costume-making -- to bring our alter egos to life. We’ll create comic books and graphic art to develop our characters’ powers and personalities, and to tell their stories. Then we’ll help our characters leap off the page, as we design and construct real-world capes, costumes, prints, props and logos. This class will draw its inspiration from the worlds of comic books, cosplay, fan art, and fashion design.

Class fee: $190. Class fee includes materials and a daily healthy snack. Sliding-scale and full scholarships are available for qualifying families. Payment plans are available to all. Please request a tuition assistance application to determine your tuition amount or payment plan. Tricky obstacles, team-building games and mind-bending challenges.. With Zebi Williams and Deja Beauford.
Join us, if you dare! Each week we’ll encounter surprise challenges, designed to stretch our minds and bodies. Maybe we’ll face a blindfold maze, a DIY escape room, a scavenger hunt, an endurance race, capture the flag or a super soaker water challenge. We’ll hone our skills by playing team-building games, developing our abilities to communicate, listen, and to work collaboratively as a team. Rather than focus on winning, our goal will be to build friendships, and to come home proud of our accomplishments, exhausted, and happy at the end of each day!

Class fee: $250. Class fee includes materials and a daily healthy snack. Sliding-scale and full scholarships are available for qualifying families. Payment plans are available to all. Woodshop.jpg

WOODSHOP FOR THE PEOPLE

Thursdays, 3:30pm - 6:00pm | Nov 7 - Dec 15 | Ages 8 - 14
From the forests to our hands: an introduction to working with wood. With Alex Guerrero and Emily Carpenter.
This class is a hands-on introduction to building with wood. We’ll start from the beginning - in our local forests - learning how trees grow and how to identify different lumber species. We'll explore the physiology of trees to understand the possibilities and limits of building, sculpting, and carving with wood. How have different tree species been used throughout history? What stories and folklore about trees and woodworking have been told? We'll journey to a woodmill to watch the machines that turn trees into lumber. Back at Kite's Nest we'll get busy in our woodshop, splitting some of our own stock. Together we'll envision our own future woodworking projects by learning to measure, mark, cut, drill, drive, nail, sand, fasten, join, bend, plane, and bevel. How can a familiarity with woodworking and carpentry help us be better community members and better environmental stewards?

Class fee: $190. Class fee includes materials and a daily healthy snack. Sliding-scale and full scholarships are available for qualifying families. Payment plans are available to all. Please request a tuition assistance application to determine your tuition amount or payment plan. Space2.jpg

SPACE 2.0

Fridays, Sep 20 - Dec 15, 4:00pm - 7:00pm | Ages 13+
A weekly space by and for teens. With Sharece Johnson.
Space 2.0 is a space for teenagers in Hudson to have as their own. We decide on our own activities and calendar. We go on regular field trips to see movies, hear speakers, and help out at community events. We cook and share meals, have cupcake challenges and cook-offs; we listen to and make music, produce our own Buzzfeed videos and GIFs, and throw dance parties. Space is a place for us to have honest and open conversations about what’s going on in the world and in our lives -- to get real about issues, and to gain the skills to be leaders in our lives and communities. Most important to us is our right to just be teens. If you’re interested in signing up, contact Sharece at sharece@kitesnest.org
