Winter Break Camp: PUPPET PARTY

Monday, February 18 - Friday, February 22: 9:30am - 3:00pm. Ages 8-14.
From sock puppets to giant puppets: building characters, telling stories, and performing arts.

In this week-long camp, we’ll explore the creative world of puppetry. We’ll start small: trying our hand at telling stories with our own sock puppets, shadow puppets, cone puppets, rod puppets and marionettes. We’ll design and construct our own characters, working with a range of materials and found objects to bring them to life, and building sets, props, and mini-installations. We’ll also dive into the art of storytelling: learning to tell stories through plays and scriptwriting, playing acting and improv games, practicing with sound effects and voice-acting, and creating our own spectacles and original performances. Over the course of the week our projects will grow in size, as we design and construct giant puppets and masks that we can wear and parade through the city. With guest teaching artist Molly Allis.

Camp fee: $350. Sliding-scale and full scholarships are available for qualifying families. Please request a tuition assistance application to determine your tuition amount or payment plan. Spring Break Camp: CAMP OF THE 5 SENSES

Monday, April 22 - Friday, April 26: 9:30am - 3:00pm. Ages 8-14.
Come to your senses: the curious arts of taste, smell, touch, hearing, and sight.

This spring break camp will lead us through the world of our five senses -- sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch. Join us for a week of multi-sensory games, delicious experiments, tactile art projects, science experiments, and music adventures.

Touch. We know that art can be beautiful, but did you know that it can also be sticky, squishy, spongy, slippery, mushy, oozy, lumpy, and even scratchy? We’ll work with our favorite textures and materials to create works of art that aren’t meant to be seen, but felt.

Smell. One day we’ll let our noses lead the way, as we investigate the fragrances, perfumes, and stinky stenches of our everyday worlds. What are the scents that make ants march single file through jungles? What are the smells that remind us of our favorite memories? Together we’ll create a museum of curious smells.

Taste. Why do you crave the things you crave? Do you like foods that are sweet, salty, bitter, sour, or… umami? Together we’ll harvest, prepare, cook, sample, test and savor foods to discover the yummy – and sometimes picky – world of taste.

Hear. How does music make you feel? What sounds get stuck in loops in your head? What’s the quietest sound we can find? Can you hear through your teeth? Together we’ll explore all kinds of sound – from silence to symphonies – by making our own rhythms, beats and melodies.

See. Our sense of sight is the most used of our five senses. But why do certain things seem beautiful to us? We’ll dive into the world of light, color, and shadows, we’ll learn how our eyes can play tricks on our brains, and we’ll travel between 2D and 3D vision to explore the power of seeing.

Camp fee: $350. Sliding-scale and full scholarships are available for qualifying families. Please request a tuition assistance application to determine your tuition amount or payment plan.
